Object design / Design for manufacture / CMF
A precision-engineered candlestick holder exploring durability as a physical and emotional quality. Restrained proportions, robust materials and a quiet permanence.

Conic is machined from solid 304 stainless steel. A shot-peened and glass bead-blasted base meets a subtly polished conical edge, giving emphasis to the material and the precision of its manufacture.
Its proportions consider both standard taper candles and the people sitting around a dining table. Silicone pads protect the surface beneath it, while small fillets guide the candle into place.
Considering different use cases and interactions highlighted the importance of facilitating conversation without obstructing diners’ faces. Average seated eye height and taper candle sizes informed the proportions of both the holder and the candle.
3D prototyping enabled detailed exploration of the form, with over 20 variants produced and evaluated to refine the conical edge angle, fillet transitions and overall height. Once the optimal form was identified, detailed engineering drawings were produced and sent to manufacturing partner NPI.

A five-axis CNC machine was selected to manufacture the candlestick holder after earlier lathe prototypes highlighted significant challenges in securely holding and accurately machining the workpiece.
